The Bomb Disposal Unit (BDU) has confirmed that Grenade Fragments recovered from the site of the attack on an under-construction Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) office in Karachi belong to a Russian-manufactured RGD-1 hand grenade. The findings were shared in a preliminary report following the explosion in Lyari.
The incident took place on Tuesday night at the under-construction JI office located in Phool Patti Lane, Lyari. Authorities immediately secured the area and launched an investigation to determine the nature of the explosive device and identify those responsible.
According to the BDU’s initial report, investigators collected around 20 small and large Grenade Fragments from the blast site. The recovered pieces included calibre-related components, which helped experts confirm that the explosive used in the attack was an RGD-1 hand grenade manufactured in Russia.
The report also described the physical impact of the explosion. Officials said the blast created a crater measuring nearly three inches deep and eight inches wide at the point of detonation. The damage pattern was consistent with the type of grenade identified during the forensic examination.
The BDU noted that Russian-made hand grenades have frequently been used in grenade attacks reported in Lyari. According to the preliminary assessment, such explosives were involved in approximately 60 to 70 percent of previous grenade-related incidents in the area. Investigators are examining whether the latest attack has any connection with earlier cases.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) South Asad Raza confirmed that three Jamaat-e-Islami activists were injured in the explosion. All injured individuals received medical attention after the incident. Their condition has not been officially detailed beyond the confirmation of injuries.
Eyewitnesses told police that a man riding a motorcycle approached the under-construction building before throwing the explosive device. The suspect reportedly fled the scene immediately after the attack. Police have begun reviewing available evidence and witness statements as part of the ongoing investigation.
Security officials are also examining CCTV footage from nearby locations to trace the suspect’s movements. Investigators hope the footage will help identify the individual involved and establish the sequence of events before and after the explosion.
The recovered Grenade Fragments have been sent for further forensic analysis to support the investigation. Authorities are expected to compare the evidence with records from previous grenade attacks to determine whether similar explosives or methods were used.
