Severe Fog Disrupts Traffic Across Pakistan's Motorways

Several sections of Pakistan’s motorways have been closed due to dense fog, causing major disruptions to traffic, especially in Punjab. According to a statement by the motorway police, parts of the M2, M11, and M5 motorways have been temporarily shut down to protect travellers.

The closures affect key routes, including the Lahore to Hiran Minar section on the M2, Sialkot to Lahore on the M11, and Rahim Yar Khan to Rohri on the M5. Saeed Imran Ahmed, spokesperson for the motorway police, explained that the dense fog has drastically reduced visibility, increasing the risk of accidents, particularly when drivers fail to maintain lane discipline.

Motorway police are urging the public to avoid unnecessary travel during the foggy conditions. Travellers have been advised to stick to daytime journeys, especially between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., as these are the safest hours for travel. Additionally, motorists should use fog lights on both the front and rear of their vehicles to enhance visibility and prevent accidents in low-visibility conditions.

Authorities have stated that the motorway sections will remain closed until the fog lifts and visibility improves. In the meantime, police will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates on the status of the roadways.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast cold and dry weather for most of the country, with dense fog expected to affect Punjab and upper Sindh. In northern areas, extremely cold conditions continue, with Leh recording temperatures as low as -12°C. Light rain and snowfall are also predicted in parts of northwestern Balochistan due to a shallow westerly wave.
