Shehbaz Sharif takes oath as Pakistan's Prime Minister

PML-N leader Shehbaz Sharif was sworn in as the 24th Prime Minister of Pakistan on Monday, following his election to the premiership for the second time.

The oath of office was administered to the premier by President Arif Alvi at the President House, with several PML-N leaders, including Shehbaz’s brother, three-time former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, in attendance.

Immediately after the oath-taking ceremony, the newly sworn-in Prime Minister received a guard of honor at the Prime Minister House.

In a not-so-surprising turn of events on Sunday, Shehbaz Sharif assumed the role of Prime Minister for the second time, wasting no time in addressing the nation’s ongoing challenges while setting ambitious goals for Pakistan, aiming to join the prestigious G20 club by 2030.

Shehbaz secured a decisive victory, returning to power after a brief hiatus since August 2023, with his opponent Omar Ayub managing to secure only 92 votes, exactly 24 days after the country’s contentious general elections.

The PML-N president and the candidate for prime minister of the newly-formed coalition has resumed his role, aiming to lead the country amid allegations of electoral fraud and significant economic difficulties. He pledged to navigate Pakistan out of crisis and outlined his government’s ambition to elevate Pakistan’s status to that of a G20 member by 2030.

The G20, established in 1999, comprises 19 countries along with the European Union (EU) and the African Union (AU), representing some of the world’s largest economies. These countries include Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

In his inaugural address, Shehbaz acknowledged the pressing debt crisis and vowed to make Pakistan self-sufficient, advocating for fundamental reforms to break free from the chains of debt.

“We will rise, and we will make Pakistan self-sufficient,” he declared.

Regarding the economy, the new Prime Minister pledged to attract investment and create favorable economic conditions to stimulate growth. He emphasized the establishment of “one window” export zones in all provinces. Criticizing his opponents, Shehbaz asserted that unlike them, his party had never contemplated harming the country. He condemned the imprisonment of opposition figures and vowed that his party would not engage in retaliatory politics, highlighting past instances of violence against state institutions.
