A labourer trapped in a marble mine in Mardan has been rescued alive after spending 17 days under debris, in what officials are calling a rare and remarkable survival.
The worker, identified as Abdul Wahab, was buried when a mountain landslide struck a mining site in Rustam Tehsilโs Nangabad area on March 31 during marble extraction work.
Rescue teams continued operations for over two weeks, battling difficult conditions and heavy rubble. Their efforts finally paid off when Abdul Wahab was safely pulled out alive, giving hope after days of uncertainty.
The landslide had trapped several labourers under soil and massive stones. According to Rescue 1122 officials, multiple teams remained engaged around the clock to locate and recover victims from the site.
The tragic incident claimed the lives of nine workers, while three others sustained injuries. A total of 12 individuals were recovered, with injured workers shifted to nearby medical facilities for treatment.
Officials said the rescue of Abdul Wahab stands out as an extraordinary moment in the operation. Authorities, including Shafi Jan, expressed condolences to victimsโ families and confirmed continued support for affected workers.
The incident has once again highlighted the risks faced by labourers in mining areas and the urgent need for improved safety measures to prevent such disasters in the future.
