WhatsApp Rolls Out Major Upgrades to Messaging, Calls, and Channels

WhatsApp has launched a fresh wave of features designed to improve how users connect and communicate, particularly in group chats and video calls. The update, part of WhatsApp’s new monthly feature release cycle, introduces smarter notifications, interactive tools, and expanded media-sharing capabilities.

A key addition is the real-time ‘online’ indicator in group chats, which shows how many members are currently active, aiming to make large conversations more dynamic. Group notifications are now more personalized too, with users able to limit alerts to mentions, replies, or messages from saved contacts.

Planning is also getting easier, as users can now create events directly within chats. These come with RSVP options, including a “maybe” response, and the ability to invite guests, adding a new layer of functionality for social and work coordination.

For iOS users, WhatsApp has introduced several Apple-exclusive upgrades. These include a new document scanner, pinch-to-zoom in video calls, and enhanced video clarity. Additionally, tappable emoji reactions and easier call participant additions streamline interaction in ongoing chats.

Channel creators now have more tools as well — from 60-second video updates to automatic voice message transcriptions and QR code-based discovery, making it simpler to grow and manage audiences.
