Anupam Kher replaces Gandhi’s image on fake Indian currency

Anupam Kher

In a strange turn of events, counterfeit Indian currency notes featuring Bollywood actor Anupam Kher’s face instead of Mahatma Gandhi’s were seized by police in Gujarat. The fake notes, totaling $193,000, were confiscated during a raid in Surat on September 22, 2024, shocking both authorities and the public.

The counterfeit operation was uncovered when police found a fake currency manufacturing unit. Four individuals were arrested for their involvement in the scam, which attempted to defraud local gold dealer Mehul Thakkar by exchanging fake notes for 2,100 grams of gold. The notes featured Anupam Kher’s image and “Resole Bank of India,” a misspelled version of the Reserve Bank of India.

The counterfeiters were reportedly inspired by the popular web series *Farzi*, which centers around a conman who makes a fortune by printing fake currency. Anupam Kher humorously addressed the incident on Instagram, expressing his surprise and amusement at the use of his face on the notes.

Meanwhile, Kher’s upcoming film Emergency, directed by Kangana Ranaut, is facing challenges with the Central Board of Film Certification, which has asked for edits before the film’s release.
