Elon Musk Faces Backlash Over Support for Far-Right AfD in Germany

Elon Musk

Elon Musk has sparked controversy after posting on his platform X that only the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party could “save Germany.” His comments, which criticized German CDU leader Friedrich Merz for refusing to cooperate with the AfD, have drawn accusations of foreign interference in Germany’s upcoming elections.

The AfD has seen a rise in popularity, currently holding second place in the polls. However, mainstream parties in Germany, including Merz’s CDU, have ruled out any collaboration with the party, which is known for its anti-immigration stance. Musk’s post, made ahead of Germany’s February 2025 elections, has ignited outrage among politicians, including CDU member Dennis Radtke, who called Musk’s interference “threatening” and “unacceptable.”

Germany’s government has refrained from commenting directly on Musk’s post, although a spokesperson expressed concerns about the platform’s evolution under his ownership. Despite these concerns, the government continues to use X for communication.

The AfD celebrated Musk’s endorsement, with their official account claiming that “millions of people have long recognized this” and the number of supporters is growing. Musk has previously made political comments on German matters, including a tweet referring to Chancellor Olaf Scholz as “a fool.”
