India’s women’s cricket team secured a dominant Asia Cup victory but did not collect the trophy from Mohsin Naqvi. The post-match presentation quickly became a major talking point.
India defeated Sri Lanka by 72 runs in the final. However, the winners did not receive the trophy from the Asian Cricket Council president.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia later explained the reason behind the decision. He said the women’s team supported the position previously taken by India’s men’s side.
Why India Did Not Receive the Trophy
According to Saikia, the decision was connected to continuing tensions between India and Pakistan. He referred to developments following the April 2025 Pahalgam incident.
Saikia said India continues playing Pakistan in multinational tournaments under the Indian government’s policy. However, he argued this does not require accepting every condition surrounding those competitions.
He said the Indian team would not receive the trophy from Naqvi because of his political position. Saikia described the decision as solidarity with the Indian men’s team.
India Secures Eighth Women’s Asia Cup Title
Despite the presentation controversy, India delivered a commanding performance in the final.
Harmanpreet Kaur and her teammates defeated Sri Lanka by 72 runs. The victory secured India’s eighth Women’s Asia Cup title.
Saikia praised the team’s performance throughout the competition. He said India remained dominant during the tournament.
He also highlighted the continued development of women’s cricket in India. The team will now focus on upcoming international assignments.
What Happened During the Presentation?
Naqvi was present at the stadium during India’s victory. BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla and Saikia were also present in the Royal Box.
During the presentation, Naqvi handed the runners-up cheque to Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu.
However, the ceremony concluded without India receiving the winners’ trophy from him.
Saikia said officials tried to resolve the presentation issue. However, those discussions did not result in an agreement.
He also said there was no personal confrontation with Naqvi during the match. Their interactions in the Royal Box followed normal protocol.
Saikia later presented the fielding medal following the final. He said another conversation with Naqvi focused on India’s upcoming Asian Games campaign.
India Shifts Focus to Asian Games
Following its Asia Cup success, India’s women’s team will now prepare for the Asian Games in Aichi Prefecture, Japan.
India is scheduled to play on September 18, 20 and 22. According to Saikia, securing the gold medal is the team’s next major target.
