OIC Expresses Concern Over Human Rights Abuses in India's Kashmir

In Geneva, Pakistan, representing Islamic countries, has emphasized the imperative need to investigate Israeli war crimes against the Palestinian people in Gaza and the West Bank, advocating for accountability.

Ambassador Bilal Ahmad, the permanent representative of Pakistan to the UN offices in Geneva, conveyed this stance during the Human Rights Council’s general debate. Speaking on behalf of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) countries, he expressed “deep anguish” over the deteriorating human rights situation in Indian-occupied Kashmir.

The OIC statement urged India to adhere to applicable UN Security Council resolutions and implement recommendations from two Kashmir reports by the UN human rights office, OHCHR. Ambassador Ahmad emphasized the importance of the Council addressing consistent observations made by Special Procedure Mandate Holders on human rights violations, impunity, and draconian laws in the occupied territory.

Regarding Israel’s actions in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (OPT), Ambassador Ahmad condemned all crimes committed by the Israeli Occupation Forces, calling for the implementation of provisional measures issued by the International Court of Justice (ICJ). He reminded all states of their responsibilities and reiterated the call for upholding respect for human rights and international humanitarian law in the OPT, including East Jerusalem. The OIC also urged the reversal of measures aimed at institutionalizing illegal occupation, apartheid, and colonial settlement enterprise in the region.

The OIC further called on the Council to work towards securing justice and accountability for the Rohingya people, supporting their safe, dignified, and voluntary return to their homes in Myanmar. Expressing solidarity with Bangladesh, the OIC endorsed calls for assistance in achieving a durable solution.

In addition, the OIC condemned the damage and loss of properties inflicted by Armenia, including cultural heritage and religious sites, in territories of Azerbaijan liberated from occupation. The statement reaffirmed full support for Azerbaijan and urged the international community to assist in the safe and dignified return of Azerbaijani internally displaced persons.

Ambassador Ahmad strongly condemned acts of religious hatred, particularly the repeated desecration of the Holy Quran, emphasizing the need for states to enact legal measures to address this menace. The OIC’s comprehensive statement reflects its commitment to advocating for human rights, justice, and accountability across various regions facing critical challenges.
