Basant 2026: Lahore Bikers to Face Fines From Feb 1 Without Safety Rods

LAHORE: Authorities in Lahore have announced strict safety measures ahead of Basant 2026 to protect citizens and prevent accidents. The Lahore police, district administration, and Punjab government are working under court supervision to ensure a safe environment during the festival.

Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Bilal Siddique Kamyana stated that from February 1, bikers riding without safety rods will face fines. These safety rods are designed to protect riders from sharp kite strings, which have caused serious injuries in the past. This step is part of the โ€œSafe Basantโ€ initiative.

Under this initiative, safety wires will be installed on one million motorcycles free of cost. For this purpose, the district administration has set up 100 installation camps across Lahore. However, officials have not yet shared the exact locations of these camps.

Kite flying during Basant 2026 will be allowed only from February 6 to February 8, and only within Lahore district. The sale of kites and strings will be permitted from February 1 to February 8. Only registered sellers will be allowed to operate during this period.

Authorities have also announced a zero-tolerance policy against aerial firing. Police warned that parents or guardians will face legal action if their children are involved in illegal kite flying activities.

The Punjab Home Department informed the Lahore High Court that Basant celebrations will be limited to Lahore only. Kite flying and kite manufacturing will remain banned in all other districts of Punjab. The Lahore High Court, led by Justice Malik Muhammad Owais Khalid, directed authorities to enforce all safety measures strictly. Officials were also asked to brief the court about public awareness campaigns.

For safety planning, Lahore has been divided into red, yellow, and green zones. The Walled City has been declared a high-risk area. Emergency medical camps, mobile clinics, and hospitals will remain on high alert. Fire safety arrangements have also been strengthened.

Children violating kite flying rules will be fined instead of being prosecuted. The import and use of metallic and chemical-coated kite strings have been strictly banned.

Meanwhile, Lahore police have intensified their crackdown on illegal kite flying. So far, 92 people have been arrested from different areas. Action is being taken against flyers, sellers, and manufacturers without exception.
