Pakistan Prime Minister Orders Probe Into National Hockey Team’s Poor Performance

ISLAMABAD – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has ordered a formal inquiry into the performance of Pakistan’s hockey team after disappointing results in the Pro Hockey League. Officials said management changes could follow.

The decision comes amid growing concern over the decline of Pakistan’s national sport. The hockey team faced criticism after a poor showing during its recent tour of Australia. Sources in the Prime Minister’s Secretariat said Sharif expressed strong displeasure at the results.

A formal investigation at the federal level has been launched to determine accountability. Officials said the government is preparing actions against those responsible within the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF). Senior lawyers and the legal wing of the Ministry of Inter-Provincial Coordination are being consulted to ensure transparency in the probe.

The prime minister emphasized that negligence in hockey affairs will not be tolerated. Officials noted that the PHF president may be asked to resign if lapses are confirmed. Key management personnel could also face replacement as part of reforms.

Government sources said all possible steps would be taken to revive the sport and restore its former prominence. Despite receiving support and concessions, the PHF has struggled to provide adequate facilities and accommodations for national players.

Pakistan captain Imad Shakeel Butt previously highlighted serious shortcomings, stating that players were not given proper accommodation during the Australia tour. Officials said these issues are being closely examined as part of the inquiry.
