The political debate between Pakistan’s major parties has intensified after recent developments regarding former prime minister Imran Khan. Leaders of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) have raised concerns about his medical and legal access while in custody.
Several detained PTI leaders recently wrote a letter to Chief Justice of Pakistan Yahya Afridi. They requested judicial intervention to ensure proper medical care and legal access for the party’s founder.
The letter was sent through legal representatives and signed by senior PTI leaders. Among the signatories were Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Yasmin Rashid, Ijaz Chaudhry, Omar Sarfraz Cheema, and Mahmood-ur-Rashid.
According to the letter, Imran Khan has faced repeated restrictions in meeting his personal doctor, lawyers, and family members. PTI leaders claimed that such limitations have raised serious concerns about his medical treatment.
The issue gained attention after Imran Khan recently received a second eye injection at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad. Doctors are treating him for a serious eye condition known as central retinal vein occlusion.
Earlier medical reports suggested that he had already lost a large portion of vision in his right eye. PTI leaders said that proper medical supervision is essential for his recovery.
Meanwhile, leaders of the ruling PML-N rejected accusations that the government was creating obstacles in the treatment process. Representatives of PML-N said that medical procedures are being conducted according to the law and relevant procedures.
The debate has also included comparisons with past political cases. PTI leaders mentioned the medical treatment provided to former prime minister Nawaz Sharif in 2019.
They stated that during Nawaz Sharif’s illness, authorities allowed full medical supervision and access to family members and legal advisers.
In response, PML-N representatives said that each legal case is different and decisions are taken based on specific circumstances.
PTI leaders further claimed that the government initially denied reports about Imran Khan’s illness. They argued that the diagnosis was acknowledged only after it became public.
According to the letter, the family was informed about his recent medical procedure several hours after it had been completed.
The signatories urged the Chief Justice to take notice of the situation. They asked the court to ensure that Imran Khan receives access to his personal doctor, legal counsel, and family members.
