KP Government Implements Fuel Conservation Measures Amid Rising Petrol Price Concerns

PESHAWAR โ€“ The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) cabinet approved a 50% work-from-home policy for government staff on Monday to conserve fuel and promote responsible governance.

Special Assistant to the Chief Minister, Shafi Jan, said the plan includes holding 100% of official meetings virtually and cutting fuel allowances for government vehicles by 25%. Overall, the policy aims to reduce government vehicle fuel consumption by 50%. Police, rescue, and security agencies are exempt from these measures.

The government also plans to curb VIP protocol vehicle and helicopter use, limit non-essential events, and reduce official dinners. Virtual classes will be prioritized in educational institutions, and Friday closures have been proposed to further save fuel.

Advisor to the Chief Minister on Finance, Muzzammil Aslam, said the KP government recommended shorter market hours to reduce energy consumption. The federal government has approved most of KPโ€™s proposals, including measures to reduce petrol use in official vehicles.

โ€œThese measures will stay in effect for two months,โ€ Shafi Jan said. โ€œOur focus is to protect the economy without burdening the public.โ€ He added that fuel supply for farmers during wheat harvesting will continue, and petrol pump monitoring will prevent hoarding.

Analysts say the initiative comes amid rising petrol prices in Pakistan, which have affected household and government budgets alike. By cutting vehicle use and limiting non-essential fuel consumption, the KP government hopes to reduce overall fuel demand and stabilize the petrol price impact on the public.

The new measures are part of broader efforts nationwide to address the challenges posed by soaring global oil rates and regional instability, which have directly influenced domestic petrol prices. Residents and businesses are expected to notice reduced fuel demand in the coming weeks.
