Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has approved a significant initiative aimed at promoting electric mobility by providing electric bikes to government employees up to BPS-16 across Pakistan. The move is part of a broader strategy to reduce reliance on expensive fuel imports while encouraging environmentally friendly transportation options. The announcement came during a high-level meeting chaired by the prime minister, where officials reviewed ongoing efforts to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles nationwide.
During the meeting, it was decided that eligible government employees would be able to purchase electric bikes through easy installment plans. This approach is expected to make electric vehicles more accessible to middle-income individuals, especially those working in public sector roles. Authorities believe that reducing the upfront cost barrier will play a crucial role in increasing the adoption rate of electric bikes across the country.
Officials also highlighted Pakistanโs ambitious target to transition 30 percent of its vehicles to electric power within the next five years. This shift is expected to bring major economic benefits, including a potential reduction of around $4.5 billion in fuel import costs. At the same time, the move is aligned with global efforts to combat climate change and reduce carbon emissions.
The prime minister emphasized the importance of speeding up initiatives related to electric mobility and directed all relevant departments to ensure quick implementation of the policy. He stressed that promoting electric vehicles is not only an economic necessity but also a key step toward improving the countryโs environmental conditions and energy security.
In addition, Shehbaz Sharif instructed authorities to ensure complete transparency in the distribution of subsidies under the National Electric Vehicle Policy. He called for strict monitoring mechanisms so that the benefits reach deserving individuals without any misuse or delays in the system.
During the briefing, officials informed that 72 manufacturing certificates have already been issued for electric motorcycles and rickshaws, while four certificates have been granted for electric cars. Moreover, 123 applications have been received for setting up EV charging stations across Pakistan, indicating growing interest from investors and businesses in the electric vehicle sector.
