Drug Cases Reported in 58 Universities Across Pakistan, HEC Launches Nationwide Monitoring Drive

A new report has revealed a concerning rise in Drug Cases across higher education institutions in Pakistan during 2025. According to official documents, incidents were reported in 58 universities nationwide.

The total number of Drug Cases reached 365, including 10 involving support staff. Authorities say the data highlights growing concerns about substance use in academic environments.

Islamabad-based institutions recorded the highest number of Drug Cases, with 153 reported incidents. Punjab followed with 130 cases, while Sindh recorded 75 cases. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa reported the lowest number with just seven cases.

The report also highlighted cases involving female students. Punjab recorded 28 such incidents. Islamabad institutions reported 10 cases, while Sindh recorded eight. No female student Drug Cases were reported in K-P.

Officials confirmed that no faculty member was directly linked to any of the reported Drug Cases. However, concerns remain about student involvement in substance-related activities on campuses.

In response to the growing issue, the Higher Education Commission (HEC) has introduced a nationwide monitoring system. The initiative aims to reduce Drug Cases and improve campus safety across Pakistan.

As part of this effort, Anti-Drug and Tobacco Committees have been established in 245 public and private universities. These committees are responsible for monitoring student behavior and promoting awareness.

HEC officials stated that the committees are actively conducting awareness campaigns in universities. They are also working to identify and prevent Drug Cases through regular checks and coordination with administrations.

University sub-campuses have been instructed to form similar committees. This step is intended to strengthen monitoring and ensure better control over Drug Cases at all levels of higher education.

Authorities believe that awareness and strict enforcement can help reduce such incidents. They emphasized the importance of creating a drug-free academic environment for students across Pakistan.
