Karachi to Launch 256 Electric Buses Under Yellow Line BRT Project

Karachi is set to introduce a major public transport upgrade under the Yellow Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project. The system will feature a large fleet of Electric Buses designed to improve urban mobility and reduce traffic pressure in the city.

According to official project documents, the Karachi Yellow Line BRT will include 256 Electric Buses in total. The project is expected to serve between 260,000 and 300,000 passengers daily once it becomes fully operational. It aims to provide faster, cleaner, and more reliable transport for commuters.

The project is being developed with financial support from the World Bank. It will also be integrated into the Karachi Breeze Network. Officials say this integration will improve connectivity across different parts of the city.

The Yellow Line corridor will cover a 21-kilometer dedicated route. It will stretch from Dawood Chowrangi to Numaish and connect further to Tower through a shared corridor. The route will include 28 stations for passengers.

Out of these, 22 stations will be at ground level. Six stations will be built underground to support smooth passenger flow in busy areas. The system is designed to handle high passenger demand efficiently.

The fleet of Electric Buses will include different sizes to match route requirements. These include 19 buses of 9 meters, 133 buses of 12 meters, and 104 articulated buses of 18 meters. An additional 8 percent reserve fleet will also be available.

Officials stated that the system will operate through six direct routes and three feeder routes. These feeder services will help passengers reach main stations more easily from nearby areas.

The introduction of Electric Buses is expected to reduce fuel dependency and lower urban emissions. It will also support cleaner transport solutions for Karachiโ€™s growing population.

Project documents show that buses will operate at average speeds between 21 and 26 kilometers per hour. This is a major improvement compared to current traffic speeds in the city, which are often below 10 kilometers per hour.

Authorities believe the Karachi Yellow Line BRT, powered by Electric Buses, will transform public transport in the city. It is expected to provide a modern, efficient, and environmentally friendly commuting option for millions of passengers each year.
