Trump Claims US Takeover of Strait of Hormuz, Announces 20% Cargo Fee

Trump Claims US Takeover of Strait of Hormuz, Announces 20% Cargo Fee

US President Donald Trump has announced that the United States will take responsibility for securing the Strait of Hormuz, describing Washington as the future “guardian” of the strategic waterway.

Trump said the Strait of Hormuz would remain open for international shipping with or without Iran. He made the announcement while outlining a new policy that would significantly change how the vital maritime route is managed.

According to Trump, the proposed policy includes the reinstatement of what he called an “Iranian blockade.” Under the plan, Iranian ships and customers would not be allowed to enter or leave through the waterway. However, vessels from all other countries would continue to use the route without restrictions.

The US president also proposed introducing a 20% charge on all cargo passing through the Strait of Hormuz. He said the fee would help cover the costs of providing security in one of the world’s busiest and most sensitive shipping corridors.

Trump claimed that the United States had previously reached an agreement with Iran. He alleged that Tehran failed to fulfill its commitments under that understanding. He added that work on implementing the new policy would begin immediately.

If introduced, the proposal would mark a major shift in US policy toward the region. The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important maritime trade routes. A large share of global oil exports and liquefied natural gas shipments pass through the narrow waterway every day.

Energy markets closely monitor developments in the region because any disruption can affect global fuel supplies and prices. The route is considered a key gateway for oil-producing countries in the Gulf to reach international markets.

Trump’s announcement is expected to attract attention from governments across the Middle East and beyond. Iran is also likely to respond to the proposed measures, given their direct impact on Iranian shipping.

International observers say any major policy affecting the Strait of Hormuz could have broad economic and geopolitical consequences. The waterway plays a critical role in global trade, making stability in the area important for many countries.

Regional governments and global shipping companies are expected to closely follow further developments. Many analysts believe any changes to navigation rules in the area could influence international commerce and energy security.

For now, the proposal remains an announced policy plan. Further details on its implementation and international response are expected in the coming days. The situation surrounding the Strait of Hormuz will continue to be watched closely due to its importance to global shipping and energy markets.
