KARACHI: A major LNG shipment from Qatar has reached Pakistan as concerns continue over energy supply routes through the region.
The cargo contains 81,936 metric tonnes of liquefied natural gas (LNG). It arrived at Port Qasim after completing its journey from Qatar.
According to the Port Qasim Authority, LNG carrier Al Marounah berthed at Terminal 2. The vessel transported the cargo from Qatar’s Ras Laffan terminal.
The shipment safely passed through the Strait of Hormuz on September 7. It later continued its journey toward Pakistan without reported disruption.
The delivery was made under a government-to-government agreement between Pakistan and Qatar. The arrival could offer temporary support to the country’s power generation system.
Several parts of Pakistan have reportedly faced extended electricity load-shedding. Some areas have experienced outages lasting between six and 12 hours.
The latest Qatari LNG shipment is also important for another reason. It is the first cargo from Qatar to reach Pakistan since regional tensions around the Strait of Hormuz increased in July.
The strategic waterway is a major route for global energy shipments. Any prolonged disruption could affect LNG supplies to several international markets.
Meanwhile, Pakistan LNG Limited has cancelled a separate spot LNG tender. The tender was issued on September 5 and was scheduled for opening on September 8.
The safe arrival of the Qatari LNG cargo has reduced some immediate concerns. However, uncertainty surrounding the Strait of Hormuz remains significant for Pakistan.
Pakistan depends heavily on imported gas to meet its energy requirements. LNG imports therefore play an important role in supporting electricity generation and other sectors.
Any fresh disruption along the shipping route could create additional pressure on the country’s energy system. It could also increase LNG procurement costs.
Higher import costs may eventually affect electricity generation expenses. The impact could become more serious if supply interruptions continue for an extended period.
For now, the latest shipment provides some relief to Pakistan’s LNG supply situation. However, future cargo deliveries will depend on conditions along key regional shipping routes.
