This recurring smog issue in the provincial capital has birthed what locals are terming a ‘fifth season,’ severely impacting the health and routines of its inhabitants.

Recently, Lahore regained its unfortunate distinction as the world’s most polluted city, registering an Air Quality Index of 399. In specific areas like Amir Town, the AQI soared to a staggering 444, with PM2.5 levels surpassing WHO’s recommended guidelines by 46.8 times.
Experts are urgently advising residents to limit outdoor exposure, seal windows against contaminated air, wear masks outdoors, and utilize air purifiers for cleaner indoor environments.
Although recent rainfall provided temporary relief by reducing smog density, the overall situation remains dire in Punjab’s capital, worsening steadily.
The Lahore High Court intervened by mandating the closure of all schools and colleges on Saturdays province-wide to combat the smog crisis. Justice Shahid Waheed, expressing dissatisfaction with the city commissioner’s handling of the situation, instructed the formulation of a work-from-home policy for two days a week to address the escalating air pollution, which poses severe health risks to citizens.
