Internet users across Pakistan may experience slower connectivity in the coming days after PTCL announced scheduled maintenance work on one of its international submarine cables.
According to the company, the maintenance activity will begin on May 11 and may continue until May 18, 2026. The repair work is being carried out by an international cable consortium to fix a fault affecting the submarine cable system.
In a public statement shared on social media, PTCL informed customers that internet services could face degradation during the maintenance period, especially in evening hours when internet usage is usually higher.
The company stated that users may notice slower browsing speeds and connectivity issues while the repair work continues. PTCL also apologized for the inconvenience caused to customers during the scheduled maintenance activity.
Officials explained that the work is necessary to improve network stability and repair faults in the international cable infrastructure connected to Pakistan’s internet system.
This is reportedly the second time in recent months that PTCL customers may face internet service degradation due to maintenance activities. Earlier, the company carried out similar maintenance work from April 14 to April 20.
Internet users often experience slower speeds and interruptions during submarine cable repair operations because a large amount of international internet traffic passes through these cables.
The latest announcement has attracted attention on social media, where many users expressed concern over possible disruptions to online work, streaming, gaming, and communication services.
The maintenance update also comes at a time when Pakistan’s telecom sector is moving toward next-generation internet services.
Last month, telecom operators in Pakistan started rolling out 5G services in selected areas after receiving spectrum licenses during an official ceremony in Islamabad. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also attended the event.
Earlier this year, the government completed a major spectrum auction in Islamabad. Authorities raised around $507 million through the sale of 480 megahertz of spectrum.
Three telecom operators participated in bidding for the important 2,600MHz frequency band, which is considered essential for launching faster and more advanced 5G services across the country.
Technology experts say Pakistan’s internet infrastructure is expanding, but submarine cable maintenance remains a critical part of ensuring long-term connectivity and service quality.
Users have been advised to remain patient during the maintenance period and expect possible internet slowdowns during peak evening hours.
The company has not yet announced whether additional backup systems will be activated to minimize disruptions during the maintenance process. However, officials said updates would continue to be shared if required.
