Afghan Embassy in India Shuts Down Due to Taliban Pressure

The diplomatic relations between India and the Taliban-led government in Afghanistan face a new setback as the Indian Embassy suspends its operations. India had initially refrained from recognizing the Taliban government that seized power in 2021, yet it allowed Ambassador Farid Mamundzay and the mission staff to continue their roles in handling visas and trade matters.

However, in a surprising turn of events in September, Ambassador Mamundzay and senior staff members departed for Europe and the United States, reportedly seeking asylum. Consequently, the embassy announced the suspension of its operations.

A statement released by the embassy on X, a platform previously known as Twitter, indicated the conclusion of a period of uncertainty. It confirmed the closure of the embassy, with the keys handed over to the host government. Both Indian government pressure and escalating Taliban demands were cited as pivotal factors in this decision.

Ambassador Mamundzay, in the statement, expressed disappointment, highlighting the unfulfilled objectives of visa extensions for diplomats and a shift in the Indian government’s stance.

“The embassy faced a tough decision due to persistent pressure from both the Taliban and the Indian government to relinquish control,” the statement added.

The embassy further reported that Afghan diplomats, appointed during Ghani’s government, had relocated to third countries, with none remaining in India. Notably, the only individuals present in India were identified as diplomats affiliated with the Taliban, participating in their routine online meetings.

However, the statement made no reference to the status of Afghan consulates in various cities, including Mumbai.

Despite these developments, both India’s foreign ministry and the Taliban-run Afghan foreign ministry have not immediately responded to requests for comment on the evolving situation. The future of diplomatic relations between India and Afghanistan remains uncertain amidst these significant shifts and escalating pressures.
