Meta to Use EU User Interactions for AI Training Amid Privacy Concerns

Meta Platforms announced on Monday that it will start using interactions and public posts from adult users in the European Union to train its artificial intelligence models. This move comes after delays in the launch of Meta’s AI technology in Europe, initially planned for June 2024, due to concerns around data privacy and regulatory scrutiny.

Users in the EU will receive notifications about the data being used, including interactions with Meta AI and public content shared by adults. However, private messages and data from users under 18 will be excluded from AI training. EU users will also have the option to object to their public data being used for this purpose.

This decision follows pressure from Ireland’s Data Protection Commission, which had previously requested a delay in Meta’s AI roll-out, and concerns from privacy rights group NOYB. Other tech firms, including X (formerly Twitter) and Google, are also under scrutiny for their use of personal data to train AI models.
