India Offers US Tariff-Free Trade Deal Amid Negotiations

US President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that India has proposed a trade deal with the United States that includes “no tariffs.” This offer comes during ongoing efforts to finalize a deal within the 90-day tariff pause Trump announced on April 9, which had imposed a 26% tariff on Indian goods.

Trump acknowledged the challenges US businesses face in selling products in India but highlighted the Indian offer as a significant move toward improving trade relations. The US and India share a robust trading partnership, with bilateral trade reaching approximately $129 billion in 2024.

Currently, India holds a trade surplus of $45.7 billion with the US, a key factor influencing the negotiations. Both countries appear motivated to reach an agreement that could reshape their economic ties and remove trade barriers.

This development signals a potential shift in US-India trade dynamics, aiming for smoother access and increased cooperation between the two largest democracies.
