USA Clinches First IIHF World Championship Gold in 92 Years with Overtime Victory

For the first time since 1933, the U.S. men’s ice hockey team has captured gold at the IIHF World Championship, defeating Switzerland 1-0 in a thrilling overtime showdown in Stockholm. Buffalo Sabres star Tage Thompson scored the decisive goal just 2:02 into sudden-death overtime, sealing a long-awaited victory for Team USA.

The final was a tense, defensive battle featuring two outstanding goaltenders: Switzerland’s Leonardo Genoni and Boston Bruins’ Jeremy Swayman. Despite a significant shot advantage for the Americans during regulation, both teams remained scoreless, sending the game into overtime where Thompson’s game-winning goal broke the deadlock.

This historic victory was also marked by a heartfelt tribute to Johnny Gaudreau, the Columbus Blue Jackets forward who tragically passed away last summer. Gaudreau’s jersey was prominently displayed in the U.S. dressing room throughout the tournament and was draped over the championship trophy during celebrations, honoring his legacy as the record-holder for most points and assists by an American in World Championship history.

Though the U.S. had previously won Olympic gold medals in 1960 and 1980 that doubled as world titles, this is their first standalone IIHF World Championship gold in nearly a century. The triumph boosts Team USA’s confidence ahead of future international contests, including the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina.

Switzerland, still chasing their first world championship, was denied yet again by the U.S., who now lead their head-to-head matchups with 18 wins in 27 meetings. The victory signals the rise of a new generation of American hockey stars dedicated to their fallen teammate’s memory.
