Gilgit-Baltistan Floods: 3 Confirmed Dead, 30 Missing

Gilgit-Baltistan Floods

Gilgit-Baltistan floods triggered by cloudbursts have caused major destruction. At least three people have died, and over 30 are missing. The disaster hit the Babusar Highway, where roads have been washed away and vehicles swept downstream.

Officials confirmed the deaths of Mashal Fatima and Fahad Islam, both from Lodhran. Fifteen others were injured in the floods and taken to Regional Hospital Chilas. An emergency has been declared at the hospital to handle the crisis.

The Gilgit-Baltistan floods swept away more than 15 vehicles, including vans carrying tourists from Sahiwal. Over 8 kilometers of the Babusar Highway have been damaged or completely destroyed. Authorities say the roads are blocked at multiple points, especially in the Diamer district.

The Karakoram Highway is also affected. Heavy debris has blocked it at Tatta Pani and Lal Pahari. Communication lines in the region are down, making rescue efforts more difficult.

Deputy Commissioner Diamer, Attaur Rehman, said the floods began around 3:30pm. Landslides followed the cloudburst, damaging infrastructure and leaving thousands stranded. He added that local residents have offered shelter to tourists in their homes. Others have been moved to nearby schools for safety.

Search and rescue operations are ongoing. Teams are working to locate missing persons and restore road access. Additional machinery has been sent from Naran to support the effort.

Hundreds of stranded tourists have been rescued so far. Medical aid is being provided on-site. The Gilgit-Baltistan government has started distributing ration packs and tents in affected areas, including Ghizer and parts of Baltistan.

Chief Minister Haji Gulbar Khan has ordered emergency measures. All resources are being used to speed up rescue operations and protect those still stranded.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has warned the public to avoid travel to flood-hit areas. NDMA is coordinating with local teams to reopen roads and monitor the flood situation. Also Read: Punjab Braces for Heavy Monsoon Rains; Flood Warnings Issued Until July 25.
