British police have confirmed that two people were killed in a violent incident during the Manchester synagogue attack on Thursday. The incident took place at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue in the Crumpsall area of north Manchester.
According to Greater Manchester Police (GMP), the attacker reportedly drove a car into pedestrians before stabbing a security guard near the synagogue. Armed officers quickly responded to the scene and shot a man believed to be the suspect.
Police reported that two people had died, while three others were seriously injured. The suspect was also believed to be dead, but officials noted they could not confirm this immediately due to suspicious items found on his body. A bomb disposal team was later called to the site to investigate.
A video circulating on social media, later verified by Reuters, showed officers shooting a man inside the synagogueβs perimeter. Another individual was seen lying in a pool of blood while wearing a traditional Jewish head covering.
Earlier reports also indicated that a synagogue security guard had been attacked with a knife. Authorities said investigations were ongoing to establish the full details of the Manchester synagogue attack and to ensure public safety in the area.
The incident has drawn strong reactions across the UK. King Charles III expressed his sorrow, saying he and Queen Camilla were βdeeply shocked and saddenedβ by the violence. He also noted the attackβs tragic timing, as it occurred on Yom Kippur, one of the holiest days in the Jewish calendar.
The Manchester synagogue attack has highlighted growing concerns about community safety and security at places of worship. Police have urged the public to remain calm but vigilant as inquiries continue.
