Authorities have launched a large-scale crackdown across Punjab to curb the spread of misinformation and provocative content on social media. The operation, which began late Monday night, has led to multiple arrests in various cities.
According to officials, the crackdown was carried out in Lahore, Kasur, Kamoke, Gujranwala, and Sheikhupura. Police confirmed that 39 individuals were detained during overnight raids. Most arrests were made in Lahore, while others were taken into custody from surrounding districts in coordinated operations.
Police sources revealed that authorities have traced the social media accounts of at least 87 additional suspects. These accounts were allegedly used to spread false information, incite unrest, and create panic among the public.
A comprehensive list of more than 200 individuals suspected of running misleading campaigns has been compiled. Officials stated that legal action will be taken once verification and documentation are complete.
The ongoing crackdown is part of a wider strategy to counter online disinformation and ensure public peace. Authorities said that such campaigns pose a serious threat to national security and social harmony.
According to reliable sources, surveillance of Twitter (X), Facebook, and WhatsApp has been intensified. Dozens of suspicious accounts have already been identified and placed under investigation.
Officials also confirmed that the operation will expand to other cities in the coming days. Raids are expected to be carried out simultaneously in several urban centers to apprehend those promoting false narratives or inflammatory content online.

Monitoring teams have been directed to track fake accounts and identify the origin of misleading news. The government has reiterated that strict legal action will be taken against anyone found guilty of using social media to disrupt public order or spread chaos.
