Deep Crisis in Balochistan: 17 Districts Ranked Most Deprived

Deep Crisis in Balochistan 17 Districts Ranked Most Deprived

A new report by the Population Council has highlighted alarming levels of deprivation across several regions of Pakistan, with Balochistan emerging as the most affected province. According to the findings, 17 out of the country’s 20 most deprived districts are located in Balochistan, where communities continue to struggle with extreme poverty, weak infrastructure, and a severe lack of essential services.

The report shows that more than 10 million people in these districts are living without clean drinking water, adequate housing, quality healthcare, and proper education facilities. Many residents travel long distances for basic medical care, while children in remote areas have limited access to schools. The lack of reliable public services has created a cycle of hardship that is difficult to break.

Unemployment also remains a major challenge. Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa currently record the highest jobless rates in the country. With few industries and limited investment, economic opportunities are scarce, leaving many young people without stable sources of income. Experts warn that this trend could worsen if immediate steps are not taken to improve local economies.

Poor infrastructure is another major concern. Many districts in Balochistan have damaged or incomplete roads, limited transport options, and weak digital connectivity. These issues make it even harder for people to reach hospitals, schools, and workplaces. In rural areas, the situation is more severe, as rapid population growth continues to strain already limited resources.

In sharp contrast, Punjab leads the list of Pakistan’s most prosperous districts. The province shows better access to education, healthcare, and employment, highlighting the wide development gap between regions. Analysts believe this imbalance underscores the urgent need for targeted policies and greater investment in neglected areas.

The Population Council report stresses that addressing deprivation in Balochistan will require coordinated efforts from federal and provincial authorities. Improving infrastructure, expanding public services, and creating job opportunities are seen as key steps toward reducing long-standing inequalities and supporting sustainable development across the province.
