A chemical used in some Artificial Nails products is facing new restrictions in the United Kingdom. The move follows concerns about possible reproductive health risks.
The new rules came into effect on August 15, 2026. They apply across England, Scotland, and Wales.
Under the regulation, manufacturers and importers cannot place new cosmetic products containing TPO on the market. TPO stands for trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide.
The chemical is used in some gel nail products. It works as a photoinitiator during the curing process.
TPO helps gel polish harden when exposed to ultraviolet light. It has been used in several products designed for gel manicures.
The chemical has been classified as a Category 1B reproductive toxicant. This classification followed animal studies involving high levels of exposure.
Those studies linked high exposure to possible fertility and reproductive problems. The classification has led authorities to introduce tighter controls on products containing TPO.
However, the new measures do not ban Artificial Nails or gel manicures in the UK. The restrictions focus specifically on cosmetic products containing TPO.
Many nail salons have already moved toward products that do not contain the chemical. Customers can therefore still receive gel manicures using alternative formulations.
The restrictions will also be introduced in stages. Existing products containing TPO can remain in use for a limited period.
Salons can continue using their existing TPO-containing stock until February 14, 2027. After this date, further restrictions will take effect.
The sale and distribution of products containing TPO will also be prohibited after the deadline. Businesses will need to ensure their remaining products meet the new requirements.
The Cosmetic, Toiletry and Perfumery Association has described the measure as precautionary. The group said the action does not suggest an immediate danger to consumers.
The changes are aimed at reducing potential exposure to a chemical linked with reproductive concerns. They also give businesses time to adjust their product supplies.
For consumers, the rules do not mean they must stop using Artificial Nails. People can ask salons whether their gel products contain TPO.
The UK measures reflect growing attention toward chemicals used in cosmetic products. Nail salons and manufacturers will now need to follow the updated requirements.

The final deadline in February 2027 will mark a wider restriction on TPO-containing cosmetic products. Until then, businesses can use eligible existing stock under the transitional arrangements.
