Punjabโs private medical colleges are set to undergo detailed inspections over concerns about vacant admission seats.
The move follows a large number of unfilled MBBS and BDS seats across private institutions.
More than 700 MBBS and BDS seats remained vacant across Pakistan during the previous admission cycle. More than 600 of these seats were in BDS programs.
Punjab has the highest number of private medical and dental colleges in the country. The province also accounted for a significant share of the vacant seats.
The National Assembly standing committee has taken notice of the situation. It wants to assess whether private institutions have enough resources for their approved capacity.
Inspection teams will visit private colleges across Punjab. They will examine several academic and clinical facilities during the process.
The inspections will cover academic infrastructure, faculty, laboratories, and teaching hospitals. Teams will also review clinical training facilities available to students.
Student enrollment figures will also be checked during the inspections. Colleges will need to demonstrate compliance with relevant regulatory standards.
The review will help determine whether each Medical College can justify its approved number of seats. Institutions must have adequate resources to provide proper education and training.
The committee is also considering action against colleges that fail to meet the required standards. Additional seats could be withdrawn from institutions that do not satisfy regulatory requirements.
The issue has also been linked to weaker demand for private medical education. High tuition fees have made private education difficult for many students.
At the same time, students have gained more options through government institutions. Increased public sector capacity has created additional opportunities for medical and dental students.
For the 2026-27 academic session, more than 500 additional MBBS and BDS seats were created. These seats were added in government medical and dental colleges across Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Punjabโs current admissions also show continued pressure on private institutions. A total of 426 MBBS seats remained vacant in private colleges after admissions concluded.
The situation has raised questions about the future admission capacity of some institutions. Authorities are now assessing whether approved seats match available resources.
The inspection process could lead to changes in admission capacity for certain colleges. It may also encourage institutions to improve their academic and clinical facilities.
The review is expected to provide a clearer picture of the private medical education sector. It will also assess whether each Medical College can maintain the required standards.
