Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan chaired a high-level meeting at the National Highway Authority headquarters to review key road projects in Gilgit-Baltistan. The meeting focused on improving connectivity in some of the regionโs most scenic but remote areas.
During the session, the minister approved construction of a 54-kilometer road linking Astore to Chilam Chowki. He also gave approval for a 31-kilometer road project connecting Skardu to Deosai, aiming to enhance access for both locals and tourists.
The minister directed that all newly constructed roads must have a minimum width of 7.3 meters. He also instructed authorities to widen and properly pave existing narrow roads, especially in mountainous regions where safety concerns remain high.
Highlighting the importance of infrastructure, Abdul Aleem Khan stated that better roads are essential for promoting tourism in Gilgit-Baltistan. Improved accessibility is expected to attract more visitors to the regionโs natural attractions and boost the local economy.
In addition to major routes, the minister approved several projects in Upper Kachura, Basho, and Shigar. These include a 36-kilometer road connecting the Karakoram Highway to Naltar Lake, along with a 12-kilometer road leading to Fairy Meadows.
He further directed the NHA to coordinate closely with the Gilgit-Baltistan government and prepare a comprehensive briefing on tourism-related projects. The goal is to ensure timely completion and maximize the regionโs tourism potential.
