ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is planning to expand its cooperation with China in the Milk Industry by exporting elite buffalo embryos and advanced dairy genetics. The move aims to boost agricultural exports and strengthen livestock biotechnology partnerships.
The discussions were held in Islamabad between Federal Minister for Food Security Rana Tanveer Hussain and a Chinese delegation. Both sides reviewed opportunities to enhance collaboration in livestock breeding and genetic development.
Officials said the talks focused on expanding exports of Neeli Ravi buffalo embryos. They also explored broader cooperation in the Milk Industry, including dairy productivity and modern breeding technologies.
According to the Ministry of National Food Security, global demand for high-yield dairy genetics is increasing rapidly. This trend is opening new export opportunities for Pakistanโs Milk Industry and livestock sector.
The ministry added that the Chinese delegation showed strong interest in livestock genetics. They also expressed willingness to cooperate in embryo transfer and advanced breeding systems.
Pakistanโs livestock sector plays a major role in the national economy. It contributes more than 60 percent to the agriculture sector. This makes the Milk Industry one of the most important parts of the countryโs rural economy.
Officials highlighted indigenous breeds such as Neeli Ravi buffalo and Sahiwal cattle. These breeds are known for high milk production and strong genetic quality, making them valuable in the international Milk Industry market.
The Neeli Ravi buffalo, mainly found in Punjab, is widely recognized for its high yield and breeding strength. Experts say it is one of the most productive buffalo breeds in the region.
Embryo transfer technology allows high-quality genetics to be reproduced quickly. It helps improve dairy productivity by using embryos from superior animals in surrogate mothers.
Pakistan officially started buffalo embryo exports to China in 2022. The approval came after Chinese authorities allowed imports through advanced laboratory-based reproduction methods.
In 2024, Pakistan exported 10,000 Neeli Ravi buffalo embryos to China. Officials called it a major milestone for the Milk Industry and livestock export sector.
Reports also show that more than 400 calves have already been born in China using Pakistani genetic material. This reflects growing success in bilateral cooperation.
Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain said Pakistanโs premium dairy breeds can support long-term agricultural cooperation with China. He emphasized the importance of expanding the Milk Industry through innovation and international partnerships.
