Pakistani astronauts meet PM Shehbaz Sharif ahead of historic space mission

ISLAMABAD – Pakistani astronauts Khurram Dawood and Muhammad Zeeshan Ali, who are set to take part in a human space mission, met Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Islamabad on Thursday.

During the meeting, the PM praised both astronauts for their dedication and hard work. He said their mission represents a major milestone for Pakistan’s space journey.

The PM described the upcoming mission as a source of national pride. He also expressed confidence that the astronauts will create a new chapter in Pakistan’s history.

He further noted that the China-assisted mission will strengthen cooperation between Pakistan and China. According to him, it will also add new dimensions to bilateral relations.

The astronauts thanked the government for the opportunity. They said being part of a space research mission for Pakistan is a great honour.

They added that they are committed to performing their duties with full dedication. They also promised to meet the expectations of the nation.

Officials said the meeting reflects Pakistan’s growing focus on space science and research development. The government continues to support new scientific initiatives.

Earlier, Pakistan also achieved another milestone in its space program. On February 12, 2026, the country successfully launched its second indigenous Earth Observation Satellite, EO-2.

The satellite was launched from China’s Yangjiang Seashore Launch Centre.

Developed by the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO), the EO-2 satellite will enhance Pakistan’s imaging and observation capabilities.

Officials said the satellite will help in multiple national sectors. It will support urban planning, environmental monitoring, and resource management.

It will also provide high-resolution data for disaster response and infrastructure development.

The PM has repeatedly highlighted the importance of science and technology for national progress. He said such missions will help Pakistan move toward modern innovation.

Authorities believe both the astronaut mission and satellite launch mark a new era for Pakistan’s space ambitions.
