Google has laid off hundreds of employees in its Platforms and Devices unit, which oversees key products including Android, Pixel phones, and the Chrome browser. The layoffs are part of an internal restructuring strategy following the merger of the Platforms and Devices teams last year.
A Google spokesperson confirmed the job cuts, explaining they were made to streamline operations and enhance efficiency. “We’ve focused on becoming more nimble… this included making some job reductions in addition to the voluntary exit program that we offered in January,” the spokesperson said.

This move follows earlier buyout offers to staff in the same unit at the beginning of the year and comes amid a broader trend of cost-cutting by Google’s parent company, Alphabet. While Google hasn’t revealed the exact number of jobs affected in this latest round, the company has made several reductions across divisions over the past year, including in its cloud segment.
The layoffs reflect ongoing adjustments within the tech industry as companies respond to economic pressures and evolving business needs.
