The world’s largest religious gathering, Maha Kumbh 2025, began on Monday in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, marking its return after 144 years.

Devotees flocked to the ghats for the first Shahi Snan during the auspicious Pauh Purnima, with thousands of pilgrims gathering at Triveni Sangam, the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythological Saraswati rivers, to take a holy dip believed to cleanse sins and lead to spiritual salvation. The 45-day event is expected to attract more than 45 crore pilgrims, including 15 lakh international visitors, far surpassing the 24 crore attendees at the 2019 Kumbh. Prime Minister Modi hailed the event as a symbol of India’s spiritual heritage and cultural unity, wishing a fulfilling experience for pilgrims.

The state government has allocated Rs 7,000 crore for the event, focusing on sanitation, security, and creating a ‘digital Kumbh’. Advanced safety measures, such as underwater drones, AI surveillance cameras, and life-saving buoys, have been put in place, while security forces are stationed across 700 boats. The event also integrates modern technology with spirituality, ensuring the safety of devotees around the clock. Cultural performances by renowned artists and the establishment of a cultural hub, Kalagram, celebrate India’s rich heritage.

Prayagraj is hosting a diverse array of devotees from across India and the world, emphasizing the nation’s cultural unity. As the Maha Kumbh unfolds, the city is filled with devotion and celebration, reaffirming the timeless tradition of the Kumbh Mela.
