A 65-year-old Thai woman was found alive inside her coffin moments before her cremation at a temple in Bangkok. The shocking discovery stunned her family and temple officials alike.
The woman, identified as Chonthirat Sakulkoo, had reportedly stopped breathing two days earlier at her home in Phitsanulok province, where she had been bedridden for nearly two years. Believing she had passed away, her brother, Mongkol Sakulkoo, placed her in a coffin and transported her over 500 km to Wat Rat Prakhong Tham, a temple offering free cremation services.
Temple manager Pairat Soodthoop said he heard faint knocks from inside the coffin just before the ceremony, which was being prepared for live streaming. โI asked them to open the coffin, and everyone was shocked,โ he said. โShe was opening her eyes slightly and knocking. She must have been knocking for some time.โ
According to local reports, the brother had initially been informed by hometown officials that his sister had died. He wanted to honor her wish to donate her organs in Bangkok but was turned away due to missing documents, prompting the cremation plans.
After being discovered alive, the Thai woman was rushed to Bang Yai Hospital, where she received treatment for hypoglycemia. Doctors later discharged her back into her brotherโs care. Her family described their reaction as surprisingly calm, with her brother reportedly feeling โindifferentโ after learning she had survived.
Temple officials confirmed they would cover all medical expenses for the woman. The incident has raised questions about medical verification practices in remote areas and highlights the importance of careful health checks before declaring death.
