Samsung Speeds Up Development of Rollable Galaxy Phone for 2028 Launch

Samsung Speeds Up Development of Rollable Galaxy Phone for 2028 Launch

Samsung is reportedly moving faster with the development of its first rollable smartphone. The new device could expand from a compact phone into a larger tablet-sized screen using a sliding mechanism instead of folding.

Reports from South Korea suggest that Samsung Display is aiming to launch the first commercial rollable Galaxy phone in the first half of 2028. The device may debut alongside the Galaxy S28 lineup or become part of that product series.

If launched, this could be the first rollable smartphone made available for regular customers. While many brands have shown concept devices before, no company has released a commercial rollable phone yet.

The upcoming model is expected to carry the name Galaxy Z Slide, although Samsung has not officially confirmed the branding.

Rumors suggest the phone could feature a 10-inch display with a 16:9 aspect ratio. The display may offer a pixel density of around 440 pixels per inch, giving users a sharp and clear viewing experience.

Industry reports also suggest a second rollable model may arrive by 2030.

Samsung currently leads the foldable smartphone market, but competition is growing. According to market research, Samsung Displayโ€™s share of foldable panel shipments dropped in recent quarters. This may be one reason the company is pushing toward new rollable technology.

The new design could help Samsung create a fresh category in premium smartphones. It may also increase the technology gap between Samsung and its rivals.

Rollable displays are more difficult to manufacture than foldable ones. The screen must roll and unroll smoothly without creases, bumps, or image quality issues.

The phoneโ€™s internal rollers and display layers must work with high precision. At the same time, the device needs to remain slim and lightweight.

Samsung Display has been working on rollable and foldable technologies for years. At CES 2023, it introduced the Flex Hybrid prototype. Later, it also showed the Rollable Flex concept at SID Display Week.

A rollable phone could offer users a compact design when closed and a larger screen for videos, multitasking, and work when opened.

However, experts expect the device to be expensive. Samsung will likely need to deliver strong performance and durability to justify the premium price.
