Bruce Willisβ wife, Emma Heming, has addressed criticism of her caregiving decisions as the actor continues his battle with frontotemporal dementia (FTD). She said she has been βjudged quickly and unfairlyβ while trying to balance the needs of her husband and their children.
During the ABC special Emma and Bruce Willis: The Unexpected Journey with Diane Sawyer, Heming shared that one of her toughest choices was moving Willis into a separate one-story home. She explained that the decision ensured the actor received full-time professional care, while their daughters Mabel and Evelyn stayed in a space better suited to their needs.
βBruce would want that for our daughters,β Heming said, noting that the girls still visit their father regularly to share meals and spend family time together.
Following the broadcast, Emma Heming took to Instagram to respond to backlash. She wrote that caregivers are often judged unfairly by people who have never experienced the challenges firsthand. She added that while open sharing can invite criticism, it also builds connection and validation for other caregivers navigating similar journeys.
The British-American model also emphasized the importance of spreading awareness about dementia and supporting families facing the disease. While some responses were critical, many messages came from people with lived experience, offering her understanding and solidarity.
Willisβ daughter Tallulah praised Hemingβs dedication, writing: βI love you so much. We love you so much. Thank you for all you do for us and our family.β
Bruce Willis retired from acting in 2022 after being diagnosed with aphasia, and in 2023 his condition was confirmed as frontotemporal dementia. Despite these challenges, Emma Heming stressed that Willis remains in good health physically and that the family continues to find new ways to connect.
βWe have a way of communicating with him that is just different,β she said. βBut Iβm grateful my husband is still very much here.β
