Pakistan Establishes its First Anti-Rape Crisis Cell in Islamabad

On Thursday, Pakistan inaugurated its first Anti-Rape Crisis Cell(ARCC) at Polyclinic Hospital in Islamabad, marking a coordinated effort to address sexual violence and support survivors, according to the United Nations (UN).

This move comes amid a notable increase in rape cases in Pakistan, many of which remain unreported due to social stigma and fear of retaliation. The Pakistan National Commission on the Status of Women recorded over 11,000 rape cases in 2021 alone.

Previously, Anti-Rape Crisis Cell’s were established at the Karachi Police Surgeon’s Office in August 2023 and Nishtar Hospital in Punjab. Activists and experts have advocated for enhanced support and stronger legal protections for survivors.

The new ARCC at Polyclinic Hospital, supported by UN Women and funded by the US Embassy’s Office of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement (INL), will provide essential services such as medical and psychological support, legal aid, and counseling, operating 24/7 with robust security measures.

The launch event featured key figures including Dr. Naushin Farooq, Head of Gynaecology at Polyclinic Hospital; Saman Ahsan from UN Women; US Embassy official Carrie Basnight; Dr. Sophia Younas from the Ministry of National Health Services; and Senator Ayesha Raza Farooq, Chairperson of the Anti-Rape Special Committee.

Ahsan emphasized the importance of ARCCs in supporting rape survivors and promoting justice. Basnight praised the Pakistani government’s dedication to protecting survivor rights, while Dr. Younas highlighted the government’s ongoing commitment to combating sexual violence. The ARCC’s establishment represents a significant step forward in providing justice and support to survivors.
