LAHORE โ Punjab CM Maryam Nawaz Sharif has given in-principle approval for a major rural development initiative. The project aims to convert 7,500 villages into model villages under Phase II of the โModel Village Project.โ
During a high-level meeting, the Punjab CM reviewed ongoing progress on rural development and clean water supply schemes. She directed officials to prepare clear timelines for completion. She also asked for โbefore and afterโ videos of each village.
The Punjab CM emphasized fast-track implementation of development work. She stressed that delays in public welfare projects will not be tolerated. She focused particularly on clean drinking water and sanitation improvements.
A key target has been set to clean wastewater ponds in villages by June 30. These stagnant water bodies, locally known as โchhappar,โ are a major health concern in rural areas.
The Punjab CM also ordered the immediate repair of non-functional water filtration plants. She said access to clean water is a basic right of every citizen. She warned that negligence in this sector will not be accepted.
To improve public service response, a dedicated helpline (1336) has been launched. The system is designed to quickly resolve issues related to water filtration plants across Punjab.
Officials briefed the meeting that Phase I of the project is already underway. Around 485 villages are being upgraded at a cost of more than Rs59 billion. Work is progressing at a steady pace, according to the report.
Under the plan, each model village will include modern facilities. These include solar-powered tube wells, improved drainage systems, and wastewater pond cleaning. The goal is to improve living standards in rural communities.
The Punjab CM also set an August 31 deadline for completing septic tank systems. These systems will help treat and reuse water for irrigation after desilting.
She further instructed the early completion of bottling plants in Khushab and Chishtian. She also ordered progress on the cluster-based water supply scheme in Rajanpur by May 15.
The Punjab CM reiterated that clean drinking water and sanitation are top priorities. She said rural development will remain a key focus of the provincial government.
