The Indian men’s cricket team reached a significant milestone in Test cricket by defeating Bangladesh by 280 runs in Chennai on Sunday. This victory marks the first time India has more wins than losses in their 92-year Test history, achieving 179 wins, one more than their 178 losses.
India joins an elite group of teams that have accomplished this feat, with only seven teams having had more wins than losses at any point in Test cricket’s 147-year history. Currently, only five teams hold this record: Australia, England, South Africa, Pakistan, and now India.

Australia leads with 414 wins and 232 losses, followed by England with 397 wins against 325 losses, South Africa with 179 wins compared to 161 losses, and Pakistan with 148 wins versus 144 losses.
However, India took the longest to reach this milestone, playing 580 matches to do so, making them the slowest among the seven teams that have achieved it at least once. In contrast, Australia accomplished this record more quickly, starting with their first Test victory against England in 1877.
Afghanistan and West Indies are two teams that once had more wins than losses in their Test history. Meanwhile, five Test-playing nations—New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, Bangladesh, and Ireland—have yet to achieve a winning record, continuing their journey in Test cricket as they aspire to join the ranks of teams with more victories than defeats.
