Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab has said the cityโs urban forest project will help reduce air pollution and improve environmental conditions. Plantation work is already in progress along Shahrah-e-Bhutto as part of the initiative.
Speaking to the media in Karachi, the mayor said around 10,000 trees have already been planted on Shahrah-e-Bhutto. He added that the overall target is to plant 100,000 saplings under the large-scale urban forest project.
According to the mayor, this effort is a major step towards making Karachi a greener and more environmentally friendly city. He said the project is designed to improve air quality and create healthier surroundings for residents.
The plantation drive on Shahrah-e-Bhutto includes neem, gulmohar, and other tree species. The planting process will be completed in different phases. Officials said native plants will be given priority to ensure better growth and sustainability in local weather conditions.
Murtaza Wahab said the project aims to increase oxygen levels and reduce the harmful effects of air pollution. He noted that the urban forest scheme would become an important milestone in Karachiโs broader environmental improvement efforts.
He shared that the city government had earlier approved plans to develop green zones around Shahrah-e-Bhutto. Work on the project began nearly two months ago through the Parks Department of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation.
The mayor also announced that similar green zones will be developed in all seven districts of Karachi. He referred to earlier plantation work in Korangi, where neem trees have already been planted as part of the cityโs green expansion campaign.
He urged citizens to take part in the plantation drive by planting saplings. He described tree plantation as a meaningful social contribution that benefits future generations.
Alongside the environmental project, the mayor said several development works are underway across the city. These include projects on Shahrah-e-Bhutto, Baloch Colony Expressway, Korangi Causeway, and Taj Haider Bridge.
