World’s First 3D-Printed Hotel Under Construction in Texas

3D-Print

El Cosmico, a distinctive hotel and campground located in Marfa, Texas, is making headlines with its development of the world’s first 3D-printed hotel. Collaborating with 3D printing firm ICON and architects from the Bjarke Ingels Group, this innovative project will feature 43 new hotel units and 18 residential homes spread across 60 acres, with an expected completion date of 2026.

This groundbreaking initiative utilizes advanced 3D printing technology, allowing for creative designs and sustainable construction methods. Liz Lambert, the owner of El Cosmico, emphasized the flexibility of 3D printing, which enables unique shapes and structures that would be cost-prohibitive with traditional building techniques. “I’ve never been able to build with such little constraint and such fluidity,” she said.

The initial units will boast 3.7-meter high single-story walls and include a three-bedroom residence and a single-room hotel. The Vulcan printer, which is 4.7 meters tall and 14.2 meters wide, uses a proprietary cement mixture called Lavacrete, specifically designed for the desert climate.

ICON’s CEO, Jason Ballard, highlighted the adaptability of the 3D printing process, which requires ongoing adjustments based on weather conditions to ensure the material’s strength and durability. While this technology promises innovation in construction, experts like Milad Bazli caution that it could impact skilled labor jobs in remote areas.

Once completed, the hotel will offer rooms priced between $200 and $450 per night, showcasing how 3D printing could revolutionize the future of hospitality and housing, particularly in challenging environments. As the industry embraces these advancements, the social and economic implications of 3D-printed construction remain important considerations.
